Anjali, a flowery yet easy lace shawl

July 10, 2017

When I started designing the Anjali shawl, I was craving for some simple and brainless knitting. After a bunch of socks, the larger needles and knitting pace was very welcomed too! The pattern was to be included in my “Lace Shawl Basics” class I taught earlier this year. It had to be simple and quick but I wanted to make a statement with it: you can use only the basic lace stitch and create impressive shawls. And I have to admit, I’m pretty happy with the result. As for the time frame, it took me just under a week from the first sketch to the last bound off stitch!

Buy the pattern on Ravelry or my e-shop.

Created while I was discovering some Bollywood classic movies, it is named after one of my favourite heroines and its flowery border evokes some of the landscape you can see in the film. I can’t knit without doing something else in the same time. Whether it be talking to friends, watching TV shows and films or listening to an audio-book, I have to keep my mind busy otherwise the repetitive nature of knitting get me to sleep after only five minutes! Let just say that the average 3 hours long Bollywood movies are perfect to keep me company while I’m knitting!

Let’s talk knitting specs

The shawl is started off with a garter stitch tab and knitted from the neck outward, with easily memorised instructions for the wrong side of the shawl. After a stocking stitch body, you move on to the lace border working from charts or written instruction as you like it best.

To knit this shawl, you’ll need two skeins of sport yarn. I used Le Chat qui Tricote Chamaille in the Bougainvillée colorway. It’s a gorgeous hand-dyed magenta yarn [nerd] ( like a really pretty Paint purple) [/nerd] with a crisp stitch definition thanks to the Bluefaced Leicester fibers. In addition to that, you’ll also need 4 mm (US #6) at least 80 cm (32″) circular needles, four stitch markers and a tapestry needle to weave ends. And of course the pattern.

I come from a family of crafters. I learnt to embroider at the age of 3 and developed a love for thread, fabric and yarn ever since. I rediscovered the joy of knitting in her studying years while I had to spend several hours on public transportation every day. I soon started designing my own patterns to play and experiment with colors and textures. I love bright colours, speckles, singles, shawls and socks so I guess you will see a lot of it here :)
